Meet Qualifications

An Explanation of Different Meets

Many meets are open invitationals with no standards for entry, either age or time. But there are meets that have specific entry requirements and it can be complicated.

Let’s start with some definitions:

Qualifying Standard – an entry time that must be bettered to enter a meet

De-qualifying Standard – a time that a swimmer must be below in order to enter a meet

Pre-requisite Time – A time that must be achieved in both a freestyle and individual medley event (the distance depends on age) in order to enter a meet

Age Groups –Swimmers are divided into age groups but how they are depends on the meet.  Sometimes single age groups (eg 10&U, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16&O), sometimes double age groups (eg 9&u, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 17&O)

Preliminaries and Finals – swimmers compete in a preliminary and the top 8 or 16 compete again in finals.

Time Finals – swimmers compete once and the times are ranked to determine the winner.
